Travellers will soon have a new way to experience Alishan, the renowned mountain resort and national scenic area in central Taiwan.

The Alishan Forest Railway, built in 1912, will soon add a luxury offering when its newest Senli train joins the route in July.

Currently in the testing stage, the first Senli train consists of an engine car and five carriages, which arrived in August last year.

Trial operations will start this month for some 40 days, plying the Chiayi Station and Alishan Station route. If all goes smoothly, the Senli train will begin full operations in July.

All five locomotives and 26 carriages are expected to be operational sometime September or October. The additions will support increased capacity, since there are only four Alishan trains at the moment.

When the new trains come into action, the existing Alishan Express will be converted into a local train, stopping at stations such as Fenqihu Station and Shizilu Station, to accommodate the large numbers of tourists visiting the Fenqihu Scenic Area.
