The company’s weekly newsletter is sent to around 500,000 Travelzoo Hong Kong members and a survey of those half million travel enthusiasts has revelations that short-haul destinations remain by far the most popular vacation choice while a new trend has emerged showing that those same travellers are leaning increasingly towards exotic destinations.
Travelzoo, a global publisher of exclusive deals for members, recently disclosed key findings from its Hong Kong membership for the first half of 2017.
Data from the period shows that nine out of the 10 most-clicked destinations are within Asia Pacific.
The 10 most-clicked destinations in the first half-year of 2017 were:
1. Macau
2. Bangkok
3. Taipei
4. Seoul
5. Osaka
6. Tokyo
7. Okinawa
8. Hong Kong
9. Singapore
10. Nagoya
Statistics also showed that Japan, Thailand and Taiwan continue to be the most favoured destinations for Hong Kongers with Japan accounting for a quarter of the clicks alone.
"Undoubtedly, short-haul travel deals are most well-received by our members," said Kevin Shui, Travelzoo's General Manager, Hong Kong. "They offer a safe and economical choice for the savvy travellers like our members. We are confident enough to predict that destinations in Asia Pacific will continue to attract more Hong Kong outbound tourists for the foreseeable future."
In terms of clicks and conversion rates, Hong Kongers loved the Macau deals in the Top 20 the most, but that is perhaps expected given Macau is a one-hour fast ferry from Hong Kong.
Hong Kongers are willing, it seems, to explore destinations further afield including Cambodia, Vietnam, Nepal, Laos, Russia, Kazakhstan, Czech Republic (Prague), Tibet, Kenya and even South America. Australia is also a popular destination, but Europe and North America have fared less well, with Thailand garnering as many clicks as the two continents combined thanks to terrorist attacks and mass shootings.
