Amid an ambitious push to host the Formula One Grand Prix, Thailand has unveiled preliminary plans for a 5.7-kilometre clockwise street circuit.
Here’s what we know about the widely anticipated sporting event.
Is the event actually taking place in Bangkok?
Thailand has big ambitions to host the sporting event, with its cabinet approving a US$1.2 billion bid to host the street race in Bangkok in 2028.
If successful, Thailand would host a race each year from 2028 to 2032, either in March or September.
What will the track look like?
The Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) has just unveiled the preliminary street circuit design planned for the Chatuchak–Krung Thep Aphiwat area.
The 5.732km, 18-corner route runs clockwise, with stops including Bang Sue Grand Station, the Bangkok Bus Terminal, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Queen Sirikit Park, Chatuchak Park, Wachirabenchathat Park, the PTT headquarters and a State Railway residential area.
Will travel be affected?
SAT estimates construction of the circuit will take approximately 1–2 years, carried out section by section.
And in the 1–2 month lead-up to the event, traffic diversions are expected on Kamphaeng Phet 2–6 Rd., Phahonyothin Rd., and Thoet Damri Rd.
During both the construction and event preparation period, certain sections of the three parks (Queen Sirikit Park, Chatuchak Park, Wachirabenchathat Park) will also be inaccessible.
The Chatuchak Weekend Market will operate as usual on race days.
