Hong Kong’s iconic Symphony of Lights harbour display will be taking its final bow soon, as a new light and projection show is expected to launch in the second half of the year.

First introduced in 2004, the nightly harbour show has become a tourism brand in its own right – a nightly 10-minute evening programme featuring laser, beam, and LED effects on over 40 skyscrapers along Victoria Harbour.

Local officials have said that while the show has built strong brand recognition, it falls short on large-scale light productions elsewhere.

Moving forward, the new show will still work off light experiences, although these will instead be beamed at traditional tourist attractions, such as at The Peak.

Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism, Rosanna Law Shuk-pui noted that introducing night shows at such attractions could hopefully increase its appeal, attracting repeat visits.

Shows will also not be staged nightly, and will instead appear only during festivals and special events.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board is in the midst of developing the new programme, and are considering arrangements for the public and international travellers to bid farewell before Symphony of Lights concludes.
