The Taiwan High Speed Rail network is set to extend to the southernmost tip of Liukuaicuo in Pingtung by 2039, completing the final stretch of Taiwan’s north-south high-speed rail corridor and boosting connectivity to the island’s southernmost region.
The newest extension will run 26.2km from Zuoying (Kaohsiung), when the final phase of the north-south railway extension is completed.
Since launching in 2007, Taiwan’s high-speed rail system has grown steadily from its original eight stations between Taipei and Zuoying. Additional stops at Miaoli, Changhua and Yunlin opened in 2015, followed by Nangang Station in 2016, bringing the total network to 12 stations.
The future Pingtung extension will also integrate with Taiwan Railways and the Kaohsiung Metro Red Line, improving cross-island connectivity and making travel between Taiwan’s major cities and southern regions more seamless.
THSR offers three types of tickets: business car, standard car and non-reserved car. The first two ticket types come with reserved seats.
Meanwhile, land development projects are also rising in Pingtung, ahead of the increased connectivity. These include Pingtung Science Park and a planned sports and leisure park.
